Re: The meaning of Honor

That's the real problem, isn't it?

By your way of looking at it, the military should be filled with morally questionable people who don't mind corrupt contractors, easy violence, and military excursions for political reasons.

But which is a better service of a country - moral people who have to struggle with competing values, or immoral people who can deliver the red mist on command?

It's pretty apparent to me that Colonel Westhusing shouldn't have ever been confronted with what the US military actually does: payola. In either terms of political agendas or military contractors who dump billions into the pockets and pacs of their government sponsors, the use of the military happens almost incidental to the country's actual need for military force.

Iraq isn't unique in this, but it is becoming very, very obvious to most of the world: the use of this war has little to do with military objectives, and much to do with pay off.

Intelligent Generals shouldn't have let Colonel Westhusing go to Iraq. They know what the reality of this use of military force is all about. They took a calculated risk that people like Colonel Westhusing could deliver part of the stated agenda in an atmosphere that is oriented around anything except that. They failed him - and consequently the other patriots who actually believe in the stated purpose of "fighting terrorism" in Iraq.

Colonel Westhusing should have been kept far away from this one.

The meaning of Honor

In reply to:

WASHINGTON x One hot, dusty day in June, Col. Ted Westhusing was found dead in a trailer at a military base near the Baghdad airport, a single gunshot wound to the head.

The Army would conclude that he committed suicide with his service pistol. At the time, he was the highest-ranking officer to die in Iraq.

The Army closed its case. But the questions surrounding Westhusing's death continue.

Westhusing, 44, was no ordinary officer. He was one of the Army's leading scholars of military ethics, a full professor at West Point who volunteered to serve in Iraq to be able to better teach his students. He had a doctorate in philosophy; his dissertation was an extended meditation on the meaning of honor.

from: Suicide of Col. Ted Westhusing, a military ethicist

The ongoing expedition in Iraq is a bad place for everyone concerned. It is a bad place for American troops who are fighting an urban holding action where they are sniped at and blown up with refuse heaps. It is a bad place for Iraqis who have lost more than 25,000 persons (and five times that in casualties) since the March 2003 invasion. It is a bad place for the image of America as a nation which proports to champion freedom, democracy and compassion.

And it's obviously no place for an ethicist who knows the meaning of honor.

Under the best of circumstances, the Iraq holding action would be a difficult task. This treacherous, mishandled, and grossly corrupt enterprise is a blight on the good name of the United States of America.

There are few good ways of waging a foreign excursion. This one will become known as one of the worst in US history. I'm sorry Colonel Ted Westhusing had to witness it firsthand.

A patriot shouldn't be asked to contribute to the self-conducted destruction of his idolatry.

People like him(and you, from what I can gather) are who American youth should really be looking up to. Probably won't ever happen.

And, which one are you on Frappr?

Dude should have just read some Hemmingway and avoided a career path that at best was an oxymoron.

Heh, that's a random picture pulled from Silver Dollar City promo material.

Sorry, I'm more shy than to put an actual photo up there.

Re: The meaning of Honor

That depends on what role you expect the military to take. I think there's plenty of honor in joining a military devoted to defending the country it serves. The problem in this case is that our military hasn't really played defense in over a century.
