I like "Nothing else matters" but my knowledge of their music is the stuff that was played on the radio.
I like a lot of different music but ever since I got into Phish, I find that I listen to Phish A LOT. I don't get tired of them like I do some bands. There's so many songs and variations in the way the songs are played from show to show. We both like classical a lot. We've seen the NSO 4 times since we got together ![]()

"Fuck dude, you don't need to play with us you are going to do great all by yourself now go out there and do it." I think Metallica said "He was too good for us and what we wanted to do." AS for guitarists this guy was really good but couldn't sing for shit so he toiled in obscurity forever while still playing with just about every major guitarist out there at one point or another. Leo Kottke
Now as for one of the best in the world, ever, you cannot get much more groundbreaking and mind bending than Tom Morello, the things he does with a guitar are pretty impressive. However, saying someone is THE best is ridiculous since it is something that is infinitely impossible to quantify.

O.K, question answered. Vae definitely has worse taste in music over Meursault. Beyonce? WTF?

Music is, indeed, an artform that is quantifiable just like literature and poetry. Unfortunately, critcal listening is a skill most people have never been trained in as well as having the vocabulary to explain it and historical knowledge to put it in context. Quite simply, understanding what's going on in a Bach aria will help you understand The Beatles (hint: AB). The first thing they teach you in a music appreciation class is to listen to and make note of every instrument you hear in a song. Try it. This simple task alone, active listening, will open up your ears and your mind. There's a difference between me calling a piece of music crap and "I don't like it." For example, I'm not a big Jeff Beck fan... in general, I don't like his solo work. But it sure as hell isn't crap. I can appreciate it and understand what's going on and why he is known as "the guitarist's guitarist." I've even seen him live. I just don't plan on picking up any of his CDs anytime soon. Britney Spears or Beyonce, on the other hand... crap. Actually, worse than crap - its product. But that's a whole other discussion. Anyway, you went on record citing some of the artists and bands you like and your preferences (which, by the way, was possibly the most exacting description I've ever heard anyone say regarding their own musical taste). And I do retract my statement that you have never mentioned anything decent. It is only fair I do the same though I've neither felt embarassment regarding my collection nor an inappropriate amount of soul bearing on display as people rifle through my CDs. My music collection is on display for all to see and is almost always a topic of conversation with anyone who enters my house. And I think this is the norm (or at least it used to be before people could hide tracks on their iPod). Here is a small slice of my soul: Neil Young, Dylan, The Band, The Dead, Floyd, ABB, Hendrix, Steely Dan, The Beatles, Santana, Zappa, King Crimson, Traffic, Dire Straits, The Doors, The Stones, The Black Crowes, Phish, Uncle Tupelo/Wilco/Son Volt. My friends joke that my musical tastes stop at 1979, unless it's a current band that is totally retro. For the most part, they are right. Also a small collection of jazz (the big guns, ie Miles Davis, Coltrane, Mingus, etc) and a rather large classical selection* as well. As you may have guessed, I'm a hard core Neil Young fan. Anyone who knows me knows this. I have all of his officially released stuff and a rather extensive collection of live shows, bootlegs, etc. I even spent a few years as a taper and trader. * My first semester in college I took a music appreciation class. On the final exam, the teacher played a piece and asked us to identify certain things about the music (what period, like baroque or classical. Type, like a sonata or concerto, etc). I asked her, "what if I can name the piece and the composer?" She laughed at me and said, "then you get an A+ for the course." I wrote down "Mozart - Piano Concerto #21, Theme to Elvira Madigan" across the top of the exam, ignored the rest of it, handed it in and walked out. She was true to her word. And yes, my life has been all downhill since then |

) and a lot of the hippie music from the 60s. I also like some R&B and Funk from the 70s (even some disco) - Parliament Funkadelic, The Commodores, Earth Wind and Fire... Damn. I'm getting old I'm psyched to hear the new Jimi Hendrix album (Valley of Neptune) that released recently. I just read an article about it in the paper the other day.

Kobex - Like you, I tend to focus on music more than lyrics. Some of my favorite bands are instrumental groups like MMW, Benevento-Russo Duo, and Tortoise.
I also tend to favor Metallica's instrumentals, though I'm not sure if they've produced any new ones since the original trio of The Call of Ktulu, Orion, and To Live is to Die. I think Hetfield's a good heavy metal vocalist in the studio but I would never call him a "good singer" and he's awful live. In addition to his voice being shot, all of his cheesy yelling and screaming detracts from the songs (for me). Quote:
Since others have been posting guitar clips, here's one of my favorite guitar tunes. R.I.P. Eddie.

Are we doing favorite guitarists now? That's easy for me: Unknown Hinson. Technically amazing, plays with soul, and has mastered every genre.
You might also known him as the voice of Early Cuyler from Squidbillies. |

Hey Algar, I take it you've already seen Phish+Neil doing Down By the River from Farm Aid '98? It's 100% epic.
For a while they were talking about cutting an album with Phish serving as Neil's backing band (similar to Pearl Jam on Mirror Ball) but it never happened. Pity, that.
